Pronoun Table & How To Write Unfamiliar Pronouns​

As a writer of multiple non-binary characters, I've been working on training myself to use the correct pronouns. Before I explain what I've found to help, it's important to remember one thing:

everybody makes mistake.

It's okay to slip up. It's okay to struggle. I use gender-neutral pronouns for myself and still mess up! Whether you're using gender-neutral pronouns for a person or a character, it's important to be fair to yourself as well. Apologise if you get it wrong, correct yourself when you spot it, but don't be too hard on yourself.

The following pronoun table is something I created (using resources similar, but adjusting order, coding it, and adding the handy noun and verb ('wand' and 'smiling') that helps me reference it easily and understand when to use which - for instance, with pronouns such as 'ver/vis' and 'hir/hir', second-guessing yourself on which it's meant to be is natural.​

Using the pronoun table as reference, practice forming sentences with those pronouns. When you get stuck, think of the applicable 'she/he/they' and go from there. For instance:

When practising, it's okay to associate a certain pronoun set as a guide for their neutral counterparts, though try not to get stuck into using the guides, or it will be more difficult to readjust and remember the correct pronouns - you'll be more prone to slip-ups.

It may take a while, but once you master (you might still make some mistakes, but that's okay!) one set, you'll find the technique easier with a second set. You might find other ways help more, or other exercises work better. Don't be disheartened if you find yourself struggling - every step counts.

Pronoun Table Code​

Please feel free to use this table on other sites (links very appreciated!) wherever you see fit (I, personally, use this code with the she/he/they/neutral pronoun in my character signatures to help others, but it could work as a guide, chardev post, or anything else). You can also style a table code off of it and make adjustments as needed.

The possessive determiner of 'wand' can be changed to anything. Your roleplay involves swords? Switch 'wand' to 'sword'. Real life? 'Wand' becomes 'phone'. Whatever helps you remember it!

If you use this pronoun table to help others, such as for a certain character or focused on one set of neutral pronouns, try to make it clear which is relevant - remove the irrelevant pronouns or bold the necessary line.
