I'm curious if most people prefer animated or real life faceclaims these days. I've noticed that, maybe... 60-70% of Jcink sites are real life/model playbys, while Proboards sites tend to be animanga. It's an interesting divide, isn't it?

I prefer real life face claims. I'm not a huge fan of anime and for the sites I play on, for the most part anime pictures wouldn't work.

I prefer real life face claims, animated face claims are just so weird to me.

A lot of the Novas I use are solely RL faces. If someone creates a 3D model, we automatically consider it unique, and don't worry about it as much.

We use both in our boards (since it's in a comic verse). When I write, I usually have real life face claims in the back of my mind. Both on the hobby boards and in my own writing. I would like to get someone to actually draw my original characters, keeping in mind the face claim as the basic idea... I will do this someday.

I think if a celeb face isn't used, a "mood" pic better suits.

I prefer real life people for face claims. It helps me to get into the story a lot more.

Usually, I have a vision of my character in my head, and will just take any faceclaim I can get that fits. Sometimes I can't find anything and have to get my friend to sketch them for me. Usually, I prefer artwork to real-world images.

First I'd like to point out that proboards isn't strictly animated face claims - there's a lot of proboards sites that use real life face claims, too. And the same goes for jcink.

I generally prefer using real life face claims, but don't mind using animated either. My issue with animated face claims is that I feel like the characters become a lot harder to relate to, than if they were portrayed by someone who looks more realistic.

Real life face claims all the way for me, but also if I can't find a suitable face - stock images?

Lately I've been getting a lot of realistic character faces by generating them on Artbreeder.com - all the images there are CC0 "Public domain" so they're free to use, and I can customize them however I want by changing the ethnicity, age, gender, and many other characteristics. It's all AI-based. The image above is one of the ones I made there. I think as we go forward and AI gets better and better at making faces, it might be a good option to use instead of taking actor photos to use as playbys.

It's always Real life faceclaims for me, even for the slightly more obscure races in Star Trek (Saurians, Denobulans, Caitians), I just like to pretend I'm casting the roles with real actors and actresses.

So, 90% my OC's I draw. I do "realistic" and animeish styles.

I use both, but not on the same site. I don't feel like I can get into the story if it's mixed face claims.

I like the idea of generating your own PB face claim - but the issue is, at least for me, that players these days like to combine the written word with visual references, so having limited pictures to reference or imagine with makes things challenging.

On the other side, using drawn PBs means you can present your (and other people characters) in any circumstance you want - if you have someone with the talent.

It's a conundrum, to be sure.

Personally? I prefer realistic PBs simply because I do real life roleplay, so in my mind, it makes more sense to use real people who really exist.

  18. Always real life face claims. I feel like the aesthetic gets messy with a mixture of real vs. illustrated.

I have always used real-life FCs, truthfully.

I far prefer creating my own faceclaims (i.e. using art of OCs), there's a lot fewer grey areas with own faceclaims.
