Vanity TLD

In recent years, there have been a number of vanity top level domains made available for public register. Things like .rocks .ninja .space or .horse. While I'm probably not going to get a dedicated domain for my game yet, maybe wait until the one year anniversary, my xo commented that he felt that the vanity TLD look tacky or spammy. I don't agree, but I do recognize they're unusual still, because a lot of them are so new.

What do you guys think?

 

I think they can be great. I purchased Star.Army for my RP, Star Army. My site is still on its original .com for now, but I may move it eventually once people get more used to the TLDs. in the meantime, it's a nice, very short (shorter than a tinyURL for my site!) URL I can use in ads and on business cards.

 

That Star Army said: If you can get the /perfect/ one, then do it. Otherwise they're pretty expensive gimmicks.

 

Some of them are crazy expensive, I mean, $35 a year for a domain? O.o Some of them are about the same as a .com or .net.

 

Now I want "irenic.institute" just because. But it's frankly silly money.

I hadn't actually realised how many there were until just now. I personally wouldn't say they were tacky. They just haven't really caught on yet. I suspect we'll be seeing an increasing number of them in the next couple of years though.

 

There isn't really a perfect one for my game yet, but star.army and irenic.institute are both perfect for you guys.

How much do the .institute tld go for?

 

I've spotted it from around £18 to £20 a year so far. Which is around $25ish at it's cheapest I think? Which considering you can get a .co.uk for less 99p is absurd money.

 

Most tld over here start around $12, so $25 might give me pause, but isn't as off-putting as the $35 that .wtf is going for.

 

I agree with this. Though I find the shift in domain and vanity options interesting. I am still not seeing the value in it personally.

 

I should mention I actually bought the domain name roleplay.community so that I would make names for people's RPs like yoursite.roleplay.community.

 

Have you set up any yet? I see that it currently directs to your star army site.

 

I think only a few, but it would only take a moment to set up a new one, if you're interested in one of these. I just need the name you want and the site you want it to redirect to. I'm offering this service to anyone on RPGfix who wants to get an address like that. I also have roleplaying.community, roleplay.wiki, and roleplaying.wiki.
